Etienne Lenoir à Paris, Ormolu and Patinated Horse Clock, circa 1765.

A very rare LouisXV/LouisXVI ormolu and patinated horse clock signed by the maker Etienne Lenoir, a Paris on both the dial and backplate. The case is transitional. The top exhibits stronger ties to the roccoco with asymmetrical garlands and a shell-shaped cartouche which is adorned with a very well cast ormolu snail. The base, however, is more classical and symmetrical. The exceptionally well-modeled, patinated, prancing horse carries the clock on its back. It has an extremely realistic coat which is both a testiment to the skill of the finisher and a detail that separates it from the vast majority of known horse clocks whose coats are smooth. The white porcelain dial has asymetrical winding arbors, black lettering and is complemented by the wonderfully pierced and engraved ormolu hands. The massive eight-day two-train movement is signed on the backplate, strikes on a bell and still retains its original silk-thread suspension. This is truly a wonderfully example of an 18th century animal clock. Height 18.5 inches.
