Johnm Arnold & Sohn No. 19 Chronometer, Zifferblatt.

A fine late 18th Century two day marine chronometer with enamel dial by Arnold in an octagonal mahogany box. Full plate keywind fusee movement, Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone, brass pointer to the adjustable set-up stud. Large "Z" type balance with small timing screws and temperature adjusting nuts. Freesprung gold helical balance spring of six coils with terminal curves. Arnold type spring detent escapement, the slot in the plate close to the fusee arbor. Fine signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Octagonal mahogany box, the hinged lid with lock and moulded gilt bezel. Small rotating brass shutter to the winding hole. Signed Arnold & Son - Inv et Fecit - London No 19. Condition Circa 1791. Diameter 155 mm

A very fine and rare piece. We believe this to be the earliest example of an Arnold marine chronometer with an enamel dial which is such an attractive feature. It can be seen that "& Son" is repeated on the plate. This is almost certainly because the plate has been cut out and a taller barrel fitted. Arnold probably found the large balance (which is a very early example of this type) required more power. The engraver would have only been given the new barrel bridge and not have realised the word "Son" was left intact on the plate. This chronometer represents a piece of horological history in the development of marine timekeepers which were still very much at the experimental stage. The opportunity to own such a piece rarely arises.
