Junghans store opening Taicang

An official ceremony on 18 February 2012 saw Uhrenfabrik Junghans GmbH & Co. KG mark the opening of the first Junghans store at the 5-star Hotel Jin Jiang in Taicang, around 48 km north-west of Shanghai. With its modern and impressive architecture and international guest flair, the Hotel Jin Jiang is an ideal platform for the first store of the longstanding German watch brand.

The 130 guests at the ceremony welcomed by the Steim family, owners of Uhrenfabrik Junghans GmbH & Co. KG, and Manag-ing Director Matthias Stotz included various representatives of German companies with a local presence as well as leading representatives from local politics, business and the press, and the Chairman of the Taicang Development Area and Deputy Mayor of the city of Taicang, Wanli Zhu.

The opening of the store is not only a consequence of the founding of the wholly-owned subsidiary Junghans Watch (Taicang) Trading Co., Ltd., but also the impressive pioneering work from the year 1993. This was when Dr. Hans-Jochem Steim, with Kern-Liebers, managed to become the first German investor to establish a production facility in China as a whol-ly-owned subsidiary, thus avoiding the prevailing necessity of foreign companies to establish joint ventures. He was followed by numerous venerable German companies, which established themselves in the region. As a result of this significant com-mitment 2005 saw Dr. Steim awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Taicang, which lies in the province of Jiangsu. Thanks to its German Industrial Park, the city is viewed as a centre of German-Chinese co-operation.
