A late 18th Century English pedometer in a gilt consular case. Brass mechanism with star wheel and rocking bar actuated by a chain. Sprung friction device compensating for large movements of the chain. Each step taken by the wearer advances the long central hand by one division. Signed white enamel dial the markings upside down with the pendant at 6 o’clock. Long central hand marked to one hundred steps, the smaller to one thousand steps. The small subsidiary marked for twelve miles, Arabic numerals, fine blue steel hands. Gilt metal consular case, gilt pendant and bow with exit for the chain.
