Jean Francois Henri Motel, (1786-1859) who studied watchmaking under Louis Berthoud, took over Berthoud's firm upon his death in 1813. Motel set up his own firm in 1819, repairing and making his own chronometers for the navy. Motel was awarded the title, Horloger de la Marine following the death of Breguet in 1823, who in turn held the title after Berthoud, establishing Motel as one of France's most important horologists.
