BASELWORLD 2009 : tradition takes place of honour

BASELWORLD

With the forthcoming opening of BASELWORLD, the world’s most important watch fair, the Swiss exhibitors are pleased to unveil the early trends for 2009. More than ever, Swiss watch creations embody the values that have forged the reputation of Swiss horology across the centuries: savoir-faire, excellence and innovation.

Watch culture rather than flamboyant finishing

2009 marks a return to traditional watch values. The movement – historically mechanical – retakes its pre-eminent place at the heart of the timepiece. To achieve authenticity, the flamboyant finishing of recent years has given place to refinement. Dials, delicately openworked, reveal the fine mechanical architecture of the watch. The vogue, in fact, is for movements designed and manufactured in-house, a manufactory spirit that confirms the legitimacy of our watchmakers. Many watch brands have also drawn on their past. Old movements and legendary models - revamped to meet current tastes - embody the world of famous names that have shaped the history of watchmaking. 2009 also sees the return of one of the oldest complications, the regulator. Rarely have the heritage and crafts of watchmaking been so prominent as this year. And it is certainly no accident that perfectly mastered technical elements are being valorised, rather than an excess of complications. As far as design is concerned, the trend is towards unpretentious refinement: anthracite grey and full-black take pride of place, while brands have been happy to combine steel cases with coloured bezels, pink gold in particular.

Rendezvous at BASELWORLD

The Swiss exhibitors are looking forward to meeting you at their booths. While watchmakers, jewellers and those working in affiliated branches represent different worlds, they are united by a constant: that of excellence and love of fine workmanship. So, see you at BASELWORLD between 26 March and 2 April!
