A. Benet Jeune, Capucine Uhr mit horizontaler Hemmung, ca.1845

Mid 19th Century French Capucine Clock with Horizontal Balance Platform. Maker: A. Benet Jeune, Vincenti & Cie, Fumey. Case: The polished bronze rectangular case has solid hinged doors to the sides and back, shaped feet and finials, an engine turned bezel and has the bell and stirrup handle supported by an arched bracket over a glazed aperture. Dial: The white porcelain dial has black Roman numerals for the hours, steel Breguet-style hour and minute hands, a steel-cut hand for the alarm and is signed ‘A Benet Jeune à Marseille’. Movement: The large rectangular eight-day time, strike and alarm movement carries the original ‘Vincenti & Cie’ trademark and is regulated by a cylinder escapement that is horizontally mounted above, is viewed through a glazed convex glass and is stamped ‘Fumey’. The rack and snail strike mechanism is mounted on the backplate, has the repeat lever out the side and has a brass hammer that strikes by torsion on the bell above. In additional to striking the hours and half hours it also repeats the hours a few minutes after each hour much like the Morbier clocks. The alarm mechanism is wound by a pull string and has a separate hammer that also strikes by torsion above. Notes: Very few capucine clocks have horizontally mounted balance platforms as it is much more common to find examples with the balance wheel vertically mounted on the backplate or that are simply regulated by a pendulum. The front plate is also stamped with an unknown trademark, ‘S ‘star’ D’. There is a star shaped stamp on the snail gear. Fumey is listed as working about 1840. The Vincenti mark was used after they were awarded the silver medal, Medaille D’Argent, by Louis Philippe in 1834. A Benet Jeune is listed as working in Marseille in 1845. Ref: For additional information on early travel clocks see: ‘Carriage Clocks’, Allix, Chapter 1. Size: 10.5 in (w/out handle).
