John Johnson Railway Watch Nr. 18224 ca. 1880

The Preston Digital Archive was created in 2008 with the initial aim of gathering together a total of 2,012 vintage images of Preston to celebrate the 2012 Preston Guild - an event that takes place every 20 years. When the 2012 Guild celebrations were brought to a close, a decision was made to continue to attract and display historical images of the town and to have the collection serve as a visual reference library, useful in supporting local history projects. We are grateful to the large number of individuals and institutions that have provided support, not least of which are the Lancashire Evening Post, the Preston Historical Society, the Harris Museum and Art Gallery and Lancashire Archives who have graciously allowed us to display selected images from their various collections.

The images on our photo stream are meant to be used for personal, educational or research purposes. Many of the images are of unknown provenance, with no accompanying data about their creators or date of creation. Every effort has been made to trace copyright holders and gain permission for use of these images. We would be grateful for any information concerning copyright and will withdraw images immediately on copyright holder’s request. Please do not download images from our collection and then re-post them on other social media sites such as FaceBook and Twitter. We are happy to support the various Facebook groups with PDA content but please post URL links instead of uploading our archive material directly to these external web sites.

This is strictly a non-commercial ad-free archive. We do not sell any of our images. Many of our donors have asked us to decline requests for rights of re-use, however, please check with us first if you would like to use archive images for special projects. Certain images may be available for purchase directly from either Red Rose Collections or The Lancashire Evening Post. Please check for links in the caption below the image to be directed to those donors own web sites.

One Flickr's most popular features is that it gives you the viewer the ability to leave comments below the image (you have to be a Flickr member to avail yourself of this function) We welcome all viewer comments and corrections. The collection is best viewed on a desktop or laptop. This will allow you to see comments and related images in the caption information.

Takedown Policy - If you are a rights holder and are concerned that you have found material in our archive for which you have not given permission, we will of course remove it. Please contact us at [email protected] with the following:

1. Your contact details.
2. The full details of the material
3. The exact URL where you found the material
4. Proof that you are the rights holder or an authorized representative of the rights holder.

How to donate material to the archive - We welcome any submissions of content from viewers. If you have Preston related photographs or ephemera please send an email to us at: [email protected] Also check out the Preston 1800-1990 Flickr group. This contains all the images from the PDA together with many more from other Flickr members. You may also be interested in our companion site at the Preston Film Archive. This is where we host our historical moving image content such as films and video's.
