A late 18th Century Swiss virgule in a pearl set gold and enamel case. Slim full plate gilt keywind movement of unusual design with resting barrel under a bridge. Plain sector cock with polished steel coqueret and regulator. Plain three arm gilt balance sunk into the plate, blue steel spiral hairspring. Rare virgule escapement with brass escape wheel. Wound through the white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Gold open face case, the bezels set with split pearls. Polychrome enamel back under a fixed glass depicting a young woman playing cards with an infant. The case opened by depressing a button in the pendant which is stamped with the number of the movement. Signed Roman Melly & Roux a Constance, Nr. 8436, Circa 1790, Diameter 44 mm. Virgules are not common. The escapement was most often used in decorative watches such as this. Francois Roman was director of the watch factory in Constance in 1785. The movement bears its stamp.
