Aus dem Großkombinat Uhrenwerke Ruhla entstanden private, hochspezialisierte klein- und mittelständige Betriebe. Zu diesen zählt heute auch die Firma Gardé Uhren und Feinmechanik Ruhla GmbH.

Die Gründung des MBO-Unternehmens (MBO: Management-Buy-out; MBO bezeichnet den Eigentümerwechsel eines Unternehmens, bei dem das Management die Mehrheit des Kapitals von den bisherigen Eigentümern erwirbt) erfolgte am 1. Oktober 1991.
Das Hauptproblem für Gardé bestand während der Gründungszeit im Wegfall aller bisherigen Vertriebswege des ehemaligen volkseigenen Betriebes VEB Uhren und Maschinenfabrik Ruhla, der zum Kombinat Mikroelektronik der DDR gehörte.
Die marktwirtschaftliche Neuausrichtung
Ein völlig neues Sortiment an Uhren und feinmechanischen Erzeugnissen sollte dem jungen Unternehmen den Übergang von der Sozialistischen Planwirtschaft zum marktwirtschaftlichen Wettbewerb ermöglichen.
Besonders intensiv arbeitete Gardé ab 1993 an der Entwicklung einer neuartigen Generation von Funkarmbanduhren. Diese konnten anläßlich der Messe in Basel im gleichen Jahr vorgestellt werden.
In dieser Phase lieferte Gardé mehrere hunderttausend Funkarmbanduhren und -module an Abnehmer für die Märkte Deutschland, USA, Japan, Frankreich, Italien, Schweiz u.a. aus.
Zusammenarbeit mit POINT tec
Die POINT tec Elektronic GmbH arbeitet in den Bereichen Produktentwicklung und Produktion eng mit dem Uhrenhersteller Gardé zusammen. 1997 unterzeichnete POINT tec einen langfristigen Lizensvertrag mit der Familie Junkers zur Nutzung der Namensrechte.

Das Deutsche Museum in München würdigt die Gardé- Funkarmbanduhr-Technologie mit seiner ständigen Ausstellung für Zeitmeßtechnik.
