Zum Bläuen werden die Stahlteile langsam und vorsichtig bis etwa 300°C erhitzt (angelassen). Das Metall überzieht sich dabei mit einer hauchdünnen, kornblumenblau schimmernden Schicht Magnetit (Fe3O4).
