History

Hutchinson Scott is an independent family run firm of Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers founded in 1976 by M Philip H Scott. Coming from a Lakeland agricultural background and educated at Kendal Grammar School Philip started his employment in 1972 with Kendal & District Auction Mart as a junior auctioneer and valuer selling livestock, general antique and household furnishings. In 1975 Philip moved from Kendal to Northallerton to work for Northallerton Auctions, where he was employed in a similar role as Auctioneer and Valuer.

Always having had a great interest in the Antique and Fine Art aspect of the profession in 1976 Philip set up Hutchinson Scott. Hutchinson Scott went from strength to strength holding regular Fine Art sales and occasional General auctions in the Town Hall, Northallerton. The business also ran many successful and memorable in situ house content sales. This continued until recent times when Philip decided to take semi-retirement.

Future

40 years on and Philip’s son Michael and his business partner Paul Hodson have taken the business forward.

Michael Scott Furniture Specialist Michael having grown up helping at the auctions decided upon leaving school to study Furniture Restoration at York College. On completion, he went on to use these skills working for a successful Antique dealer in the busy restoration workshops. At the age of twenty, Michael started his own antique business which lead to successfully restoring and dealing in Fine Antique Furniture and Clocks. Michael has always had a keen interest in fine furniture and has over 25 years experience in this field.

Paul Hodson Clock Specialist Paul Hodson is the son of long established and well respected Lancashire dealer Barry Hodson. He like Michael grew up in the world of Antiques and has made a successful career for himself specializing in Fine Antique Clocks and Furniture. Paul has always been interested in Clocks, Barometer and Scientific objects and has developed a very good knowledge in this field.

Going into partnership and running Hutchinson Scott together means that between them Michael and Paul have over 40 years of inherited and acquired knowledge and skills.
