Gilt three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel, Nicole's patent steel winding work above the plate. Engraved cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. English lever escapement. Small engine turned gold dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Engine turned 18 carat open face case, clip on back with small engraved motto in the centre, gold crown and bow. The gold dial set within a wide bezel which has a hand that can be rotated clockwise until it reaches the position of the hour hand. This can then be used to tell the time by using touch pieces set at the hours on the engine turned middle. Between the touch pieces the quarters are indicated by indentations in the band. The touch piece at 11 o'clock is also used to set the time. Maker's mark "AN" in a rectangle, number matching that on the movement. Signed E. J. Dent Watchmaker to the Queen London Patent 17280, Hallmarked London 1851 Diameter 49 mm. Very few watches were made with montre à tact. Most examples seen are by Breguet who frequently used this form of mechanism. The watch was probably manufactured for Dent by the firm of [[Nicole Nielsen]]. [[Nicole, Adolphe|Adolphe Nicole]] took out the patent for keyless winding in 1844.
