Good examples of early Arnold chronometers with OZ balances have become very difficult to find. This one is illustrated in John Arnold and Son by Vaudrey Mercer, plate 106 and listed as being "In its original state". It was used on H.M.S. Isabella by Captain Ross in 1818-19 on an Arctic expedition to find the North West Passage. It was placed at the disposal of the expedition by Mr. Henry Brown. The case was made in recent years by Martin Matthews closely following the design of consular cases found on Arnold chronometers of the period.
