The Art of Watchmaking in Ceramic

Practically unscratchable and extremely hard: these are the characteristics that best describe ceramic. The positive characteristics of ceramic make it an ideal material for a timekeeper’s case. Thus inspired, the designers at Glashütte Original have given the otherwise quite classically oriented Senator Perpetual Calendar a new visual. The matt black ceramic case lends the traditionally complicated art of watchmaking a modern appearance, combining tradition and innovation in an exciting new way.

The time and information shown on the perpetual calendar displays are easily read through a sapphire crystal with double-sided antireflective coating kept in place by an enlarged bezel. The date, month, and typical Glashütte Original panorama date are presented with white numerals against a black background, and a silver disk decorated with stars that rotates underneath the dial displays the respective moon phases of a radiantly polished moon.

A leap year display with jumping indicator located at 12 o’clock indicates a leap year when its red indicator points to the 4. The dial visual is clear and structured, giving each function ample space.

The 42 mm ceramic case houses automatic manufacture Caliber 100-07, which commands a power reserve of more than 55 hours (+/- 10%) and sports a reset mechanism that allows easy synchronization of the second hand with a time standard. Unlike other reset mechanisms, the second hand here is neither connected to the winding stem nor the crown. As a result, when the crown is pulled out, the balance remains in oscillation and the movement continues to run, significantly reducing material stress. The reset mechanism is activated by pressing a separate button on the side of the case at 8 o’clock. The rotor winds in both directions, providing constant power to the movement.

A scratch-resistant black calfskin strap with tonal stitching and a ceramic buckle provide the perfect finish to the elegant, first-class design of this timepiece.
