Französischer Uhrenhändler und Fabrikant

Rue de Touraine Nr. 8 Paris

This house, established in 1813, is specialized in the high précision clockmaking shopunder the Empire and the Restoration periode. We owe Raingo some astronomical clock models, for which he deposits a certain number of patents. By 1830 Raingo settles down 8 rue deTouraine. Afterward the four Raingo brothers first known as clockmakers added bronzes of art and furnishing to their catalog in 1841. In 1860, this house supplied bronzes to the Emperor and the Empress and possesses a large number of collector's items. First specialized in the reproduction of classic arts, they edited then contemporary artists, grinding a small number of models. The most reknown are Pradier, Carrier-Belleuse and Auguste Moreau. They will also collaborate with prestigious cabinet makers in particular François Linke.

They (La Maison Raingo Frères) participated at Universal Exhibitions in 1867, 1878 and 1889 and obtained each time medals. : a gold one in 1889. At this time they were located in 202 rue Veille du Temple Paris.

Raingo Freres was a Parisian clockmaking firm of the 19th century, founded by Z. Raingo who worked in Ghent & Paris. The firm made many types of clocks from Astronomical clocks and orrerys to conventional domestic clocks such as mantel, wall and carriage clocks. Z Raingo is believed to have fled from France in his early years for political reasons. He worked in Gand in Belgium for some time and has a fine orrery clock attributed to him as being made in the Gand in 1810.

He was recorded as being clockmaker to the Duc de Chartres in 1823. He started to make orrery clocks about 1810, The earlier clocks carried the name of Antide Janvier, who made the movements. In 1815, Raingo patented his designs for an orrery and published them in 1823. The patent describes a clock with moving spheres and is one of many patents that he registered.

During the period of 1820-30 he is known to have produced a series of about a dozen similar astronomical clocks. Many of these clocks can be found in large collections today. The firm of Raingo Freres was trading in the Rue Vielle di Temple in Paris in 1829, and continued until after 1900. The firm is also known to have traded at Rue de Saintonge between 1840-50. Raingo Freres exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862"

The name Raingo is well known in French clockmaking. Unfortunately, despite a fair number of clocks that appear on the market and the large number of years that they were in business, little is known about the actual family members. To help clarify who they were, and so as not to confuse them, this much is known: Z.J. Raingo was working in Paris before 1800 and then moved to Ghent, Belgium, where he created elaborate and highly complicated astronomical clocks. An M. Raingo was working in Paris around 1815 and he published a book called, "Description of a clock with a spherical movement". My guess is that both men were related and also related to the Raingo Brothers or Raingo Freres who opened a clock shop in Paris beginning in 1929. Their first shop was in the Rue Vieille du Temple where they worked for eleven years. They moved the shop to Rue de Saintonge in 1840 where they worked for two decades. In 1860 they either moved back to the original location or opened a second shop at the old location, where they began to create bronze statues of their own design, in addition to clocks and watches. They continued to produce fine clocks and bronzes from 1860 to 1900.
