An early 20th Century English centre seconds lever deck watch in a silver open face case and brass keep case. Gilt three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel, broad Ministry of Defence arrow engraved on the plate. Plain cock with garnet endstone, polished steel regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. English table roller lever escapement. Screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain silver open face case, maker's mark "R&S" in a rectangle. Circular brass deck case lined in dark blue velvet, the glazed front cover a bayonet fit with sprung lock button Signed A Johannsen 149 Minories London 7656

A Johannsen & Co. A two day boxed Chronometer, the movement having spotted plates, chain fusee, maintaining power, five spoke wheelwork, split bi-metallic balance to the chronometer escapement with helical hairspring, the back plate stamped with the Admiralty arrow and serial number '8104', the four inch silvered dial engraved 'A Johannsen & Co, 149 Minories, London, Makers to the Admiralty, The Indian Govt and Royal Navies of Italy, Spain and Portugal', numbered '8104' with engraved black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and 56 hour 'up and down' state of winding dial, having blued steel spade hands, in a brass gimbal stamped 'H S I' and further Admiralty arrow, the mahogany case with inset brass handles and bone plaque engraved with a repeat of the maker's name and number. Height 19cms. Complete with original numbered chronometer key. Asmus Johannsen & Co (being his Cousin C Lorenzen) are recorded as working at 149 Minories from 1865 until 1925, the serial number indicating a year of manufacture for circa 1916. The Company started in 1859 and in 1916 took the first two places in the Greenwich trials and were successful in the Kew trials, in 1923 they were awarded a group prize at the Brequet Centenary Exhibition at Neuchtel
