Feine außergewöhnliche silberne Schreibtischuhr in Form eines Schädels Geh.: zweiteilig, realistische Darstellung eines Schädels; scharnierte obere Hälfte, die den Blick auf die Uhr freigibt. Ziffbl.: weisses Email, arab. Stunden, goldene Spoon-Zeiger. Werk: 19 mm, Vollplatine, feuervergoldet; Schnecke/Kette, Spindelhemmung, dreiarmige Messingunruh, durchbrochener und gravierter Kloben.

Fine and unusual silver desk watch in the shape of a skull

Case: Two-part, realistically formed as human skull, hinged top revealing the watch. Dial: white enamel, Arabic hours, gold spoon hands. Movm.: 19 mm, firegilt full plate, fusee and chain, verge escapement, 3-arm brass balance, pierced and engraved continental cock.

David Gide registered his business in the suburbs of Geneva on January 1, 1792. In 1801 he entered into a partnership with Guidon and the famous Jean Georges Remond, forming Guidon, Remond, Gide & Cie.

He is known for his fantasy watches. This is his first one in the form of a skull that appeared on the market. Skull watches from this period are rare. Gide most likely created it to reflect upon the brevity of life, having before him the Reign of Terror (5 September 1793 – 28 July 1794), and the annexation of Geneva by the Napoleonic forces in 1798, all of which he witnessed as a young man in the beginning of his career.
