Man nennt die Kalender-Anzeige einer mechanischen Uhr dann "ewig", wenn sie das Datum, den Wochentag, die Monate und die Mondphase automatisch richtig anzeigt. Sie berücksichtigt nicht nur die unterschiedliche Monatslängen im Verlauf eines Jahres, sondern auch alle vier Jahre das Schaltjahr. Der dafür notwendige, komplizierte Mechanismus wird durch sogenannte Programmräder gesteuert.
