Philip Phillips war von jüdischer Abstammung, er war der Sohn von Joseph Phillips oder welche um 1770 aus Deutschland kam. Diese heiratete eine Engländerin. Philip Phillips wurde um 1887 geboren und schließlich am 15. Februar 1832 von der Clockmakers Company Freigesprochen. Drei Söhne David, (1813- ? ), Joel (1817- ?) Laurence (1815- ? ) und Lewis (1819) wurden beim vater ausgebildet doch keiner wurde bei der Clockmakers Company Freigesprochen. David war zuerst Uhrmacher im Bury Street, No.15 St. Mary Axe. Doch später arbeitete er hier als Löffelmacher.
Philip Phillips arbeitete im Leadenhall Street, bis in die 1870er Jahre hinein hatte Leadenhall Street einen hohen Anteil an typischen altmodischen Londoner Einzelhandelsgeschäften, die fast alle den Büro-Neubauten des späten 19. Jahrhunderts zum Opfer fielen,
Phillip Phillips was listed as a member of the Clockworkers' Company in 1777, and a member of the livery of that Company from 1790-1840. He is recorded as working at St John's Square, London. There was also another, or perhaps the same, Phillip Phillips, working in Aldersgate Street from 1785, this firm were previously recorded as 'Derrick & Phillips'.
