Brilliant prospects for the future of Saxon watchmaking: Thursday 6 July 2017 saw a new generation of watch experts celebrate the conclusion of their training at the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking. Glashütte Original management and teachers at the School awarded diplomas to this year's 23 proud graduates of the manufactory's own training institute. Nineteen of the new graduates have learned the traditional craft of watchmaking, and another four now begin their careers as precision toolmakers.

A. Lange & Söhne timepieces of the 21st century constitute the link to a heritage that began in Saxony more than 165 years ago. From the very beginning, Ferdinand A. Lange described his business philosophy as follows: “With the knowledge that quality craftsmanship always assures the most advantageous purchase, we are aware that we can render the best service to our clientele by supplying only watches of the highest class.” Lange still upholds this commitment to the ethics of the artisan, because this alone creates a little piece of eternity in an ever changing world.

After a 40-year-long involuntary hiatus, Walter Lange managed to breathe new life into the legend of the historical brand and to successfully take on the powerful competition from Swiss watchmakers. The clever idea of bringing Germany’s most famous watch brand back to life was so powerful that it made its way to reality.

Mühle-Glashütte is now honouring the life and work of its founder with its new Robert Mühle special edition, which also breathes fresh life into a classic complication that is now a rare treasure: the date hand. As you would expect from a timepiece made in a genuine manufacturing workshop, the mechanism was personally designed by Mühle-Glashütte's expert watchmakers themselves. This exclusive characteristic is even more enhanced by the fact that this special edition watch is limited to a total of just 100 pieces.

The original and functional stopseconds design of Lange trainee Rabea Sethmacher (22) came away with first prize in the Swiss competition for young watchmakers, the "Concours de l’Institut d’Horlogerie Cartier 2011" (IHC) on 7 May 2011 in Neuchâtel. The winner can now look forward to her prize – a one-week trip to New York.
