The Senator Tourbillon – Edition Alfred Helwig appears to contradict the law of gravity in two ways at once: The untiring rotation of its Flying Tourbillon resists the pull of gravity, and the filigreed mounting reinforces the impression of pure weightlessness. With its new, light dial and individual numbering, the edition, limited to 25 pieces, offers moving insights into the lightness of being.

Not very many people take it upon themselves to found a company at an age when most people are retiring. But there was no hesitation when, in 1990, Walter Lange had the opportunity to revitalise the factory of his forefathers, whose operations were interrupted by the Cold War and the division of Germany into East and West. He was 66 years old at the time. The reunification of Germany opened a historical window of opportunity for the great-grandson of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, founder of the Saxony-based maker of fine watches. After a 40-year-long involuntary hiatus, Walter Lange managed to breathe new life into the legend of the historical brand and to successfully take on the powerful competition from Swiss watchmakers. The clever idea of bringing Germany’s most famous watch brand back to life was so powerful that it made its way to reality.

Composed of 51 international watch experts, the jury of the Watchstars Awards 2015/2016 chose the ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER as the best watch in the Technical Stars category. The decision was made because the German brand had presented an outstanding reinterpretation of this fascinating complication, the jury said. The independent watch prize is awarded in five categories. Only jury members ...

Mühle-Glashütte is now honouring the life and work of its founder with its new Robert Mühle special edition, which also breathes fresh life into a classic complication that is now a rare treasure: the date hand. After founding his family company in 1869, Robert Mühle played a significant role in establishing the excellent reputation of the German town of Glashütte as a top watchmaking location thanks to his high-precision measuring instruments. Arthur Junghans had an enduring influence on the relationship between Uhrenfabrik Junghans and the automobile. Having ordered one of the first Daimler test vehicles in 1892, 1895 saw the son of company founder Erhard Junghans acquire a second automobile: a four-seater Motor-Viktoriawagen. To enable the use of a steering wheel in the car the Schramberg businessman had to produce the worm gear steering himself. At the beginning of the 20th century the first laws were passed regulating speed in built-up areas, increasing the significance of clocks in automobiles. As a consequence in 1908 Junghans produced its first car clocks. These not only aided the time orientation of the driver, they were also a form of tachometer: using the time taken to travel a known distance it was possible to determine the speed at which it was covered – making the car clock a key instrument for drivers.
