Der Name Melly ist sehr weit verbreitet in Genf. Meist wurden die Melly's Uhrmacher und fast alle sind miteinander verwandt. Ursprünglich war der Familienname Collomb, Stammvater der Melly's ist Pierre Collomb Melly und sein Sohn Jean Collomb dit Melly (1571-1611) welcher nach Genf übersiedelte, er kam vermutlich aus der Gegend. Sein Sohn hatte 10 Kinder, und ein Enkelkind 14 Kinder. In dieser Zeit verschwand auch der Name Collomb und es blieb nur Melly übrig.
