Hälfte des 18. Jahrunderts unabhängig voneinander in Frankreich und England von mehreren Uhrmachern in verschiedenen Varianten entwickelt. Der Grund für eine derartige Entwicklung lag darin, daß verschiedene wissenschaftliche Forschungen wie beispielsweise astronomische Beobachtungen ein Präzisionszeitmeßgerät erforderten, als auch darin, daß die Seefahrt eine anwendbare Methode zur exakten Bestimmung der geographischen Länge benötigte (siehe: Act of the Queen Anne).
