Alpina Watch International

Mit der Umwandlung der Alpina Union Horlogère zur Alpina Watch International im Jahr 1972 wird die Fabrik von Straub & Co. geschlossen. Damit geht die Ära der Herstellung eigener Manufakturwerke zu Ende. Auch das viele Jahre benutzte rote Dreieck und der Schriftzug "Alpina" verschwinden.

Man arbeitet mit einer Anzahl von Montagebetrieben zusammen, die ausschließlich Rohwerke verarbeiten, unter anderem:

• Mido, Biel.
• Wyler, Biel.
• Nitella, Tramelan.
• Olma Numa Jeannin, Fleurier.

Mit der Entwicklung der elektronischen Uhren begann auch für Alpina ein neues Zeitalter. Die ersten digitalen Uhrwerke kamen von General Electric (USA) und von Ricoh (Japan). Sehr schnell konnte auch die Schweizer Uhrenindustrie die Nachfrage nach Schweizer Quarzuhrwerken decken. Am meisten wurden die Werke von Ebauches SA und Harley Ronda verwendet.

Leider entgeht auch die Alpina nicht den schwierigen Zeiten, die in den siebziger und achtziger Jahren in der Schweizer Uhrenindustrie herrschen. Das große Gebäude der Union Horlogere in der Uniongasse wurde aufgegeben und in die Silbergasse umgezogen. Zu Beginn der achtziger Jahre zieht man in ein viel weniger zentral gelegenes Gebäude in der Gewerbehofstraße. Dennoch kommt die Alpina wie so viele Marken in dieser Zeit aus den Schwierigkeiten nicht heraus. Das Büro in Biel wird geschlossen, nur in Deutschland unterhält man in Köln noch ein Büro zum Vertrieb.

Die Alpina-Anteile gingen schließlich komplett in die Hände des Deutschen Brüder Max und Hans Gerl über. Der Name Alpina war in Deutschland noch ein Begriff bei den Dugena-Kunden. Nach der Auflösung der Dugena sah man für die Marke Alpina noch Möglichkeiten. Die verwendeten Werke kamen hauptsächlich von ETA. Mit dem Comeback der mechanischen Uhr wurden auch die ETA-Automatikwerke, -Handaufzugwerke (Peseux) und -Chronographen (Valjoux) in die Kollektion aufgenommen. Doch schließlich beschlossen die Eigentümer in Deutschland im Jahr 2000, die Marke Alpina vom Markt zu nehmen.

1899 wurde in Berlin eine deutsche Generalvertretung (Alpina Berlin) eingerichtet. 1904 trat J. Assmann, Glashütte der Union Hologerie für den deutschen Markt bei.

Um 1909 gründete Alpina Union Horlogère in Glashütte, Altenberger Str. 18, die "Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina", die unter der Signatur "Alpina Union Horlogère Glashütte SA" Uhren, zumeist mit Schweizer Werken unter Verwendung Glashütter Gangteile, herstellte. 1912 wurde das erste Alpina Chronometer in Glashütte gebaut, ebenfalls mit Schweizer Werk unter Verwendung Glashütter Gangteile. Ab 1913 wurden auch die 21-linigen Uhren für die Deutsche Marine produziert.

Alpina bezog u.a. Werke des Kaliber 58 von der UROFA und vollendete diese. Während des II. Weltkrieges wurden auch Uhren des Kalibers 48 von der Alpina Berlin fertiggestellt und reguliert.

1917 kam es aus politischen Gründen gegen Ende des 1. Weltkriegs zur Trennung in die Union Horlogère SA in Biel/Schweiz und die Alpina Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft GmbH (ADUG) in Berlin/Deutschland.

Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wird der deutsche Zweig der Alpina reorganisiert und startet 1949 in Darmstadt neu als DUGENA, Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina. Die deutsche Alpina wurde 1972 aufgelöst.

Heutiges Markenlogo

In der Schweiz lag noch Interesse für die berühmte Marke vor. So wurde die Marke Alpina 2002 von Frederique Constant in Genf o.l.v. Dr. Peter Stas erworben.

Die neue Alpina Watches International SA bezieht ihre Werkstätten und Büros in Plan-les-Ouates, einem Vorort von Genf. Im Jahr 2003 wird Alpina auf der Baseler Messe wieder mit einer kompletten Modellserie im Markt eingeführt. Dabei wird das Image der Marke wieder auf den "Geist des Alpinismus" zurückorientiert. Entsprechend haben die neuen Modelle ein sportliches und robustes Erscheinungbild.
